NCEL Division One - Glasshoughton Welfare 0-1 Club Thorne

NCEL Division One - Glasshoughton Welfare 0-1 Club Thorne - 14.10.2025

A quick turnaround for Thorne, just three days after their 2-2 draw with Route One Rovers. Glasshoughton, meanwhile, came into the game off the back of a ten-day break - but with confidence low following an 8-1 home defeat to Armthorpe.

There were five changes from Saturday’s draw, with Nathaniel Muenda, Ryan Ellison, Jake Robinson, Marc Newsham, and Luke Williams all returning to the starting eleven. Lewis Walker kept his place up front after adding two more goals to his tally last time out.

Unbeaten in four and facing a side bottom of the table with a -30 goal difference, Colliery went into the game as strong favourites - and they started like it.

Thorne were on top early, creating several good chances. The first big moment came inside ten minutes, when a tidy attacking move ended with Alex Peterson finding the back of the net - only for the flag to go up for offside.

Both wingers, Williams and Muenda, looked dangerous throughout the first half, constantly stretching the play and creating opportunities. Williams came close himself, cutting inside from the left before firing just over the bar.

A dominant spell midway through the half saw Colliery win a flurry of corners, but Glasshoughton’s defence held firm. Muenda continued to cause problems down the right and had a great chance to break the deadlock before the break, but his effort was saved well under pressure.

The final chance of the half fell to Lewis Walker, who met a pinpoint cross from Reiss Harrison - but the home keeper once again pulled off a fine save to keep it level.

Thorne started the second half strongly, immediately putting the hosts under pressure. Muenda was sent clean through but fired over, Newsham saw his shot from distance drift wide, and Harry Brown’s long-range strike skimmed inches past the post.

The best chance came when Muenda beat his man down the right and fired a low cross into the box, only for Peterson to miscue his finish.

Ethan Harrison was introduced after 64 minutes and made an instant impact, driving down the left and setting up Muenda for another close effort. Moments later, Harrison forced a smart save from the keeper himself.

Marc Newsham made way for Dom Mellor shortly after, and Thorne continued to push for the opener. Muenda and Ethan Harrison linked up well again in the 75th minute, forcing yet another save from the impressive Glasshoughton keeper.

With eleven minutes to go, the pressure finally told. Andy Wright started the move by winning a crucial header at the back, Mellor picked it up and threaded a brilliant pass down the left to Ethan Harrison, whose cross found substitute Louis Seddons. Seddons beat his man and squared it for Reiss Harrison, who finished first time from six yards to make it 1-0 Thorne.

Unfortunately, the goalscorer’s night ended painfully as he went down five minutes later holding his shoulder - later confirmed to be a broken collarbone.

The final whistle confirmed Thorne’s fifth unbeaten game in a row - a hard-fought win that keeps momentum rolling ahead of Saturday’s local derby with Selby Town.
